CFA is one of the largest volunteer based emergency services, containing approximately 59,000 volunteer members, supported by around 1,200 staff members.

Skye Fire Brigade is currently taking applications for recruitment, both in active fire fighters and behind the scenes roles as well. Volunteers come from all walks of life; mums, dads, professionals, tradespeople, students, retirees - everyone is welcome to apply.

Volunteering gives you the chance to learn new skills, meet new people, challenge yourself in a wide range of environments, and learn specialist operational roles such as HAZMAT and fire ground leadership. CFA Volunteering is a great way to put something back into your community.

There are some requirements to become an operational fire fighter; that you live a short distance from the Station, that you are willing to undertake 3-6 months of operational training, and that you understand that Firefighting will involve strenuous and physically challenging activities, so a certain level of fitness is required to undertake this role.

Non operational volunteers assist the brigade by providing administration assistance, delivering community information, fundraising, catering as well as management recruitment.

All applicants will be required to undertake a Police Check, a 6 month probationary period and full training and equipment will be provided.

The amount of time you commit to will depend on the role undertaken, typically a fire fighter would spend 2-3 hours in weekly training or brigade meetings on a Monday Night as well as 2-3 hours station maintenance and truck inventory checks usually done on a Sunday Morning, usually on a month by month roster plus any incidents that occur. Specialist training may require more time, this can either be weeknights or weekends dependent on the course.

"Volunteering's great! I've had some fun times, learnt a hell of  different things and really put myself in some challenging situations. Met some great mates along the way too!" - Firefighter Nic Smedley, Recruit 2011
